In Memory of Jonathan Kayes

Jim Hershey

Jonathan was a good friend. Our relationship began when we were kids. He
lived near our school, he had a little brother, the same age and grade
as mine. Jonathan's intelligence, curiosity and strategic thinking was
evident at an early age.  He was an excellent chess player. He liked
those war games people played with map boards and little cardboard
squares.  I remember well one visit where he reported that his cool new
game Stalingrad really got into the heads of Russian generals.

As we grew older and high school introduced new ideas and pursuits, we
still shared a number of interests and our respective circles of friends
grew.  We both worked as ushers at the Muny Opera, an outdoor musical
theater. He was also service minded and we both spent several summer
weeks as counselors at a summer day camp that brought together
disadvantaged kids from various inner city service agencies and suburban
high school counselors. At school, our teachers could always count on
keen observations from Jonathan (sometimes emphatic with his outstretch
hands and sustained shrug). In retrospect, even then, people were
learning from him.

I don't remember much of what happened post graduation. Classmates and
pals head in different directions and "home" isn't really the pivot
anymore. We saw each other from time to time through connecting circles
of friends. I knew that he, too, had become interested in international
experiences and affairs. After undergrad graduation, I joined the Peace
Corps, a mutual friend entered medical school, another stayed in St.
Louis maintaining the family business. I lost touch with Jonathan as we
chose our respective careers.

Fast forward to an end of a life arriving altogether too fast. Intelligence, curiosity,
strategic thinking, imagination, analysis, service, sacrifice, intelligence... these
qualities and interests were evident in Jonathan early on. The many
lives he touched, the organization in which he spent his career and our
country are better and safer for Jonathan's devoted attentions. He will
be missed.

I am deeply saddened to learn of Jonathan's passing.  He was a colleague of the highest integrity who endured the risks and made the sacrfices of a Case Officer in the National Clandestine Service for 27 years.  He was a creative problem solver and always a supreme optimist.   Jonathan was among the very best and brightest in an organization fairly dominated by high - end performers, and his success in very critical matters of state will stand as a model for up and coming officers for a long time.  In an environment where failure often has grave consequences, Jonathan succeeded brilliantly with elan' and skill.  He epitomized the best that our country has produced. Adieu, my friend.

I will miss you Jonathan: your wit, your keen abiltiy to see the answers in the mist, and your unfailing interest in everything about learning. I will also miss your smile every morning when I stuck my head in your doorway and said, "Good morning, Jefe'."

Your model of a "Lifelong learner" will inspire Agency officer for years to come. As instructors mention you and your love for reading and thinking about new ideas in their classrooms, your energy for learning will live on.

Rest in peace my friend; you have given the world much.

I feel very honored to have known such a kind, generous and inspiring man who gave so much to the learning community. I also feel very honored to have known another side of him: his passion for the Chinese language and culture. 一路走好。

That the learning world has lost a great leader, colleague and friend is without question. We at The MASIE Center are still reeling from Jonathan's passing. We wish him and his family peace and love. I was so blessed to have worked with Jonathan here and there over the past few years, and then so much in the past 6 months. The sheer depth of his knowedge was clear right from the start and I was so looking forward to picking his brain about anything and everything! But mostly, I will miss the way he made me laugh. Whether on the phone, through IM or on Skype, he always made me laugh. I'll remember him fondly forever.

Jonathon was always the person with the amazing ideas ... I just loved talking to him because I always walked away inspired and feeling as if being in the learning industry was just the coolest place in the universe.   He was always generous with his time in helping LINGOs and our non profits.   I can't imagine a Masie conference without sitting down to have a cup of coffee with Jonathon... always smiling, positive, energetic, and so excited about our industry.

We will miss you Jonathon ... and thank you so much for everything.

I met Jonathan briefly at the Learning Leader Academy in Saratoga Springs this July.  Even though his illness left him physically weak, that did not stop him from traveling to NY, or participating in the Leadership Academy.  Very few would have that dedication and determination to carry on.  I feel privileged to have known him and to have shared this time with him.

My deepest sympathies to his loved ones during this most difficult time.

It was such a honor to have spent time with Jonathan a few weeks ago during the Learning Leadership Academy.  Although physically weak, he did not let that diminsh his message or enthusiasm for learning!  The strength he demonstrated was so encouraging and inspiration but his passion for learning and leadership was clearly evident and inspiring!  I will carry my notes from his leadership academy comments and sharing with me through the rest of my career and life and feel truly blessed to have spent a short but meaningful time with him.

To Jonathan's family - my deepest sympathies are with you and I hold you up in my thoughts and prayers.

I never met Jonathan but he was with us through SKYPE at the Masie Center's Video Lab and Learning just last month. I enjoyed his comments and learnt from him. I am truly sorry to learn of his passing away--a definite loss to the learning community besides his family and friends!

I've had a very hard time coming up with anything adequate to say. As I've read through this beautiful tribue, I keep thinking "yes, yes, that it exactly!"

I feel blessed that Jonathan was part of my learning family, and that I could call him both mentor and friend. He challenged my assumptions and my thinking on everything from learning to international relations to Shakespeare. What a genuine, gentle, one-of-a-kind spirit we've all lost! But how lucky we all are to have known him and been touched by his wisdom and his generous nature.

My favorite memory of Jonathan is him dancing with sheer joy to the Fab Faux at Learning 2009. Beatles music!!

My heart goes out to his family.

What a shock. I had the opportunity to work with Jonathan over the past few years and he always seemed full of energy. He will be missed by those of us in the Intelligence Community and the learning profession. We have both lost a real leader.

I am just so angry.  Jonathan had so much more to give.  We were all so scared for him during his first battle with cancer. He fought so hard, with such bravery and beat it; I guess we all thought he had won.

I know this is a terrible loss for everyone who knew him but it is such a great loss to his family. I wish them the strength to get through this terrible time of loss and grief.  Besides his intelligence and humor Jonathan was one of the most loyal and supportive friends.  He had great compassion and patience and always cheered you up with that impish smile and twinkle in his eyes.

I can’t think how hard this is for his family, his wonderful wife and two beautiful daughters of whom he was so proud.   Just remember Jonathan would want nothing but your happiness and would want you to celebrate his life by living your own to the fullest as he had.  May we all follow his example.

Jonathan's loss is a shock and we are deeply saddened. In his quite, reflective, yet often hillarious way, Jonathan stretched our thinking, challenged us to greater insights, and always helped us with best-in-class theory and practice that shaped our craft. Many of the best ideas from the field have Jonathans finger prints all over them. He was a tribute to the agency, to our field, and to all of humanity. He left a big mark in this world, and we will miss him greatly. Our love and support go out to you Karen and your lovely daughters....God bless him.

Thank you for your love of learning, Jonathan and for your support of my work in the field at our agency.  To paraphrase something I said at your retirement event:  JKKA (Jonathan Kayes kicked ass.)  May you rest in peace after your valiant fight against cancer and may beautiful memories of you sustain Karen and your daughters in the time ahead.

Jonathan, I will miss you has a valued colleage, sounding board, teaching partner, and ultimately a friend.  When I think of legacy, yours is so very rich because you were a learning leader in every sense of the word every day and in every way.  I know your learning journey continues even now.   My deepest sympathies to your family.

A great loss of an inspirational, stimulating, courageous, visionary who seved his country with exceptional devotion and skill.  It was my privilege to work with him at CIA University and witnessed his special ability to translate vision and ideas into succesful programs. I loved his sense of humor, his eclectic interest in everything, our conversations about music and his full engagement in life as he dealt with his disease.  I will miss him greatly.  My prayes and condolences to his family.

I was in Manila with Jonathan Kayes in the mid 1980s.  Jonathan was simply wonderful and a wonderful person to work with.  I knew him at a time when he and his future wife (then in Indonesia) became engaged.  In Manila, he learned that he could get the Wall Street Journal from me relatively easily, since it lacked a sports page!!  He also instructed me about my investments and I listened and learned from him.  Jonathan was a wonderful person, and my thoughts are with his family, his wife, his daughters.  They are young adults and I know will miss their father.

Jonathan, you didn't owe me an apology...I'm just so glad I was in time to let you know how much knowing you means to me.  Long ago we paved the way for a new program to make the world better.  Without your openess, your willingness to share your knowledge, and your dedication - we would not have been a success.  Thank you.  Our paths have crossed throughout our careers - each time sharing a new experience.

Jonathan, you are so missed.  The notes are flying and so are the tears - your passing has rocked our world.

Take care Jonathan.  May you be at rest; free from pain; and may your soul be free to soar.

Jon was one of the brightest people I ever had the pleasure to meet. We spent many an hour debating military history, talking about everything that was happening in the world, and trading terrible puns. And that was in high school. I think that it was wonderful that he was able to spend his life pursuing his passions. Clearly, it was a life well spent.

I remember Jonathan from secondary school in STL as a student in my history classes.  He was filled with an "uncool" passion for history in all its forms that was very impressive in retrospect.  I'm not surprised that he made a life/career living and studying language, culture and people.

I never met Jonathan, but he sounds like a wonderful person and friend to all.  Goes to show that a civil servant can be a leader of creativity and excellence.  Looks like the angels are going to have some great learning experiences in the near future with Jonathan at the helm!  May he rest in peace and may his family find consolation in their bereavement.

I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to be with Jonathan at the Learning Leaders seminar just a few weeks ago.  I could tell he was not feeling well but he wanted to be part of the action.  It seemed at every lunch we ended up sitting together.  I told him at one point that he did not have the appearance or toughness of a person that would have worked at the CIA.  He then turned to me and said,” Bob, what do you think a person should look like with that type of job”.  I replied, “Bond, James Bond”.  He then said, “That’s not the idea, a CIA person needs to blend into the crowd”.

What a great guy!!

Jonathan's leadership and commitment to all things learning will be missed by all who knew him...and by those he had not yet had the chance to impact. Your ability to chance lives through learning will be sorely missed, Jonathan. Rest in eternal peace, my friend! G.

I feel robbed. Jonathan was not only a gifted teacher who still had a lot to give all of us in education (whether "corporate" or not), but he was just one of the most erudite and decent folks I had the pleasure of getting to know. And I didn't get to know him well enough. I was looking forward to many debates on everything from books to movies to food and especially had looked forward to cooking with him and breaking bread, sharing wine and good conversation.  He was just lovely and engaging and the world is diminished. That said, what a legacy he leaves. Einstein talked about not being a man of success but rather one of value and Jonathan embodied that in everything he did.

Thank you for allowing me to come to the University to follow my passion for learning about and teaching leadership.  It is not often one gets an opportunity to pursue their passion, for that I am grateful.

May your family find comfort in knowing that you made a difference in this world, especially in the field of learning.

May you rest in peace as you prepare for your next life.

Rest in peace my dear friend.  You have been one of God's true gifts on this earth.  Over the many years I have learned from and with you, your unique brand of humanity, humor and intelligence has left a legacy that has touched many and will remain with us forever.  My love and prayers to Karen, Lauren and Alison.  No words can soothe the pain of their loss, know we are here for you.

I had the pleasure of working with and getting to know Jonathan while participating in the Virtual Leadership team project.  I was struck by his ability to listen and help teams navigate ideas and turn them into something tangible.  How lucky we were to have worked with him!

We wish we could have had more time to know him.

Jonathan, after 17 years as a cancer survivor, you have finally lost your fight.  Your courage and grace inspire us now and always.  Karen and the girls have lost a husband and father.  We have lost a good friend and colleague.  Your legacy as the Agency's first CLO lives on and will continue to benefit the legions of learners that pass through CIAU, and all who are touched by the Masis Center and the Learning Consortium.  My daily walks around Reston will not be the same without you, but, I will continue to use the iPhone Trail Guru app that you recommended to me.  My sincerest hope is that your learning and yearning soul may now rest in union with the All Knowing--and that we may all continue to learn each day in your memory.  Rest in peace my friend.

I met Jonathan for the first time at the most recent Leadership Academy and was very moved by his spirit and will to contribute even in the face of such a severe and difficult illness.  I appreciate being able to witness the respect, love and caring that Elliott, Nigel .and Cathy demonstrated and know that all that loved him have lost a very valued friend and a colleague of the highest order.  My thoughts are with you

I met Jon my freshman year in college and we were roommates our sophomore year, and he spent alot of time listening to Wagner opera those first two years and for the next two on 5 Jay.  Jon was a warm, funny, witty and interesting guy, who shared a passion for learning that I admired and tried to emulate.  He came to Vermont to study Chinese and I enjoyed giving him a tour of Fort Ticonderoga on a hot July day.  We were looking forward to our upcoming trip to Colorado.  That trip will have new meaning for me now.

To Jon's family, I offer my sincerest condolences and my best wishes for all of you.  Please do not hesitate to contact me if I may be of any assistance up here in New England at any time.

I, too, met Jonathan during our freshman year in college.  He impressed me as an intellectual with a thirst for knowledge.  He constantly reviewed his flash cards for studying Chinese.  I also remember that he made the acquaintance of Nim Chimsky and we all thought that this signing chimp probably mistook a very hairy Jon for some relative.  My condolences to his family and colleagues.  Very sad news.

jon & i met our freshman year in college and lived on the same dorm floor for all four years.  he was a master ny times sunday crossword puzzle filler-outer.  he taught me to love bagels and lox.  he had a wonderful sense of humor, quirky and warm at the same time.  i had the pleasure of spending an afternoon with him and his older daughter last summer as he took her back to college.  we were going to get together with some other college friends in a month in boulder, co., too.  as michael said, jon, you will be sorely missed.

The number of posts on this page (in just one day) give a better sense of the great impact Jonathan had on the lives of others than anything I could write.  I feel blessed to have had jonathan as a good friend and mentor for a number of years.   Only Jonathan could use a word like omphaloskepsis correctly in a sentence or work in the theory of Transactional Distance to any lunchtime conversation.  Thanks, Jonathan, for all the learning!

I know how excited you were to bring Jonathan in as the CLO, and although I didn't know Jonathan well, I could tell that a lot of things were happening at the center as a result of his presence.

This is such a shock - our prayers and thoughts are with you all and especially with Jonathan's family.

I am in Baghdad at the moment and I wanted to pay my respects.

Jonathan  impressed me with his style and communication skills.  Perhaps more importantly I recall how welcoming he was to a newcomer from overseas when he was such a veteran attendee.  He was a gentleman and a gentle man - not a combination seen often enough these days.  I will remember his unfailing enthusiasm for learning and also for inspiring those with whom he came into contact.

I am sure that you will receive many messages from others with similar experiences of his kindness and warmth.  I hope that all these fond memories will go someway to easing the pain felt by all his loved ones at this time.

May God continue to bless him.

Jonathan

I am so endlessly sad. It has been a true pleasure and honor getting to know you as part of the Masie family in recent months. I so wish we had more time. You have been so inspiring to me with your warmth, your wonderful sense of humor, your wisdom, your spirituality, your amazingly broad cultural awareness and your leadership excellence. There are so many things I wanted to learn from you. So much advice I wanted to ask for.

I was surprised by your high energy level and faith while seeing and feeling how serious your illness was. You were so strong. When most of us would have simply given up, you not only had energy for yourself but also for us checking in with on your health. Maybe that is why even though my heart knew much earlier I still do not want to believe it. Nothing can ever fill the gap you are leaving. All that is left for me is to be grateful for the short time I had with you, our professional collaboration and private side conversations that I wish you knew have already had so much impact on key decisions in my life.

May you be well and free of suffering wherever you are now. My love goes to your family and friends.

I was foruntate to be one of the participants at the Masie Academy Program 2 weeks ago and it was an honor to be in the presence of Jonathan.  In reflecting on Jonathan's engagement in the program  I was impressed with his ability to distill what was being said or asked to him immediately providing essential, thought provoking information or in turn asking a critical question to stimulate further thought or discussion.

His inner strength as a leader for the Academy in face of such illness is testament to his physical and mental courage and to his passion & commitment to learning.

My condolences to his family, Elliott, Cathy, Nigel and the entire Masie team.

Jonathan, I hope you are getting mail up there, as I really want you to be able to read this.

You and I have become close over the past year, first as a client, then as a friend, and more recently as a trusted advisor. I will miss our long email conversations and frequent musings on the phone. I will miss your voice and your candid observations that guided me through many political passages.

Your wisdom and humor will be missed tremendously.

Travel safe my friend.

It was always such a great pleasure to work with Jonathan. He was always on top of everything, willing to help in any way, very knowledgeable yet humble, volunteering as needed …. I was one of the lucky ones to see him recently in Saratoga when although not feeling well, he still wanted to teach a Leadership class. And teach he did. What an example to all!

Jonathan – we will miss you for a very, very long time and in many, many ways.

I met Jonathan this spring and was looking forward to more.  In a short span of time, his genuineness and openness was and will remain infectious.
He will be sorely missed.  Peace to his family and dear friends.

Jonathan was a humble soft spoken man who loved to take his time to teach and open up people's minds to the world of learning.   He was one of my first friends in the CLO world and I am forever grateful to have had the opportunity to be in his company.

I've met and talked with Jonathan over the past few years at Learning Conferences and other Masie sponsored events.  What a delightful, humble man.  Never assuming, but filled with energy and a hunger to share and to learn that always amazed me.

I will miss his spirit of kindness and love, but somehow I'm sure he'll still be with us, urging us on, and taking delight in knowing that the work continues.

God bless him!

It was a pleasure to know Jonathan through the Consortium.  His work was visionary and his willingness to share sets the standard for all of us.  This is such a loss for his family and friends, but also a tremendous loss for the learning community.  I know that he would have challenged us and inspired new ways of thinking and learning.  May we look back and treasure the time that we have had with him.

I met Jonathan only once, at the Chicago meeting this June.  His wisdom and wit helped me immediately connect with the Masie Center's ideology.  I also appreciated his guidance with social learning initiatives that I lead.

As a fellow cancer survivor, I also admire his courage in keeping on with his life.  He dealt with the disease but didn't let it control him.  Bravo, Jonathan, for your courage and heart.  You will be missed.

I felt an instant connection to Jonathan after meeting at the 2010 LMS Conference in Chicago.  His passion, his knowledge and his sense of humor regarding the learning field were evident each time we spoke.  He inspired me greatly.

Peace and prayers to his family... his legacy and circle of influence will reverberate in the learning community for years to come.

Deepest sympathy --

I met Jonathan virtually through Skype while visiting the Consortium.   It takes a very engaging person to shine through a Skype session.  Jonathan was not just engaging but left you wanting to learn more about the subject matter you were discussing.  And even more so, left you wanting to learn more about his life experiences, which would often interplay as examples while in deep discussion.  Peace be with you and yours.

Jonathan...The profession and Intelligence Community have lost a true friend.  Your professionalism, insight and engagement set the tone within the Intelligence Community.  My recent work with you as part of the Masie Center continued at the high level of achievement you were well known and recognized for.

My family's thoughts and prayers go out to you and yours.

God bless...

Jonathan,  I was so fond of you for your gentleness and your hard edge. You loved learning and you loved getting things done!  What a great combination.  BUT above all I admire and respect your courage. You never gave up on what you did best,  and you showed absolutely no self-pity for your personal tribulations which you tried to shrug off. You gave and gave when others would have simply given up.

My heart goes out to your family. We will all miss you a great deal and a great deal more than you realise.

The training and learning world has lost a great leader.

Although I hadn't spent much time with Jonathan, I was so impressed with his depth of knowledge, kindness and consideration for others.

Jonathan, you will be missed, but not forgotten.  I can only imagine what you're learning today!

God Bless you and your family... including your Masie Center family.

 Sincerely,
Don.

I have been honored to know Jonathan for the past 5 years.  He has been such an incredible source of knowledge and wisdom.  He is an inspiration to go out there and stand for what you believe in. Make the most of each situation and live each day to the fullest.

He will be greatly missed by this field, his friends and his colleagues.

Thank you for being a part of my life Jonathan. I will always chuckle over our Lab in the Box conversations.
