In Memory of Jonathan Kayes
Jim Hershey
Jonathan was a good friend. Our relationship began when we were kids. He
lived near our school, he had a little brother, the same age and grade
as mine. Jonathan's intelligence, curiosity and strategic thinking was
evident at an early age. He was an excellent chess player. He liked
those war games people played with map boards and little cardboard
squares. I remember well one visit where he reported that his cool new
game Stalingrad really got into the heads of Russian generals.
As we grew older and high school introduced new ideas and pursuits, we
still shared a number of interests and our respective circles of friends
grew. We both worked as ushers at the Muny Opera, an outdoor musical
theater. He was also service minded and we both spent several summer
weeks as counselors at a summer day camp that brought together
disadvantaged kids from various inner city service agencies and suburban
high school counselors. At school, our teachers could always count on
keen observations from Jonathan (sometimes emphatic with his outstretch
hands and sustained shrug). In retrospect, even then, people were
learning from him.
I don't remember much of what happened post graduation. Classmates and
pals head in different directions and "home" isn't really the pivot
anymore. We saw each other from time to time through connecting circles
of friends. I knew that he, too, had become interested in international
experiences and affairs. After undergrad graduation, I joined the Peace
Corps, a mutual friend entered medical school, another stayed in St.
Louis maintaining the family business. I lost touch with Jonathan as we
chose our respective careers.
Fast forward to an end of a life arriving altogether too fast. Intelligence, curiosity,
strategic thinking, imagination, analysis, service, sacrifice, intelligence... these
qualities and interests were evident in Jonathan early on. The many
lives he touched, the organization in which he spent his career and our
country are better and safer for Jonathan's devoted attentions. He will
be missed.

I will miss you Jonathan: your wit, your keen abiltiy to see the answers in the mist, and your unfailing interest in everything about learning. I will also miss your smile every morning when I stuck my head in your doorway and said, "Good morning, Jefe'."
Your model of a "Lifelong learner" will inspire Agency officer for years to come. As instructors mention you and your love for reading and thinking about new ideas in their classrooms, your energy for learning will live on.
Rest in peace my friend; you have given the world much.

Jonathon was always the person with the amazing ideas ... I just loved talking to him because I always walked away inspired and feeling as if being in the learning industry was just the coolest place in the universe. He was always generous with his time in helping LINGOs and our non profits. I can't imagine a Masie conference without sitting down to have a cup of coffee with Jonathon... always smiling, positive, energetic, and so excited about our industry.
We will miss you Jonathon ... and thank you so much for everything.

I met Jonathan briefly at the Learning Leader Academy in Saratoga Springs this July. Even though his illness left him physically weak, that did not stop him from traveling to NY, or participating in the Leadership Academy. Very few would have that dedication and determination to carry on. I feel privileged to have known him and to have shared this time with him.
My deepest sympathies to his loved ones during this most difficult time.

It was such a honor to have spent time with Jonathan a few weeks ago during the Learning Leadership Academy. Although physically weak, he did not let that diminsh his message or enthusiasm for learning! The strength he demonstrated was so encouraging and inspiration but his passion for learning and leadership was clearly evident and inspiring! I will carry my notes from his leadership academy comments and sharing with me through the rest of my career and life and feel truly blessed to have spent a short but meaningful time with him.
To Jonathan's family - my deepest sympathies are with you and I hold you up in my thoughts and prayers.

I've had a very hard time coming up with anything adequate to say. As I've read through this beautiful tribue, I keep thinking "yes, yes, that it exactly!"
I feel blessed that Jonathan was part of my learning family, and that I could call him both mentor and friend. He challenged my assumptions and my thinking on everything from learning to international relations to Shakespeare. What a genuine, gentle, one-of-a-kind spirit we've all lost! But how lucky we all are to have known him and been touched by his wisdom and his generous nature.
My favorite memory of Jonathan is him dancing with sheer joy to the Fab Faux at Learning 2009. Beatles music!!
My heart goes out to his family.

I am just so angry. Jonathan had so much more to give. We were all so scared for him during his first battle with cancer. He fought so hard, with such bravery and beat it; I guess we all thought he had won.
I know this is a terrible loss for everyone who knew him but it is such a great loss to his family. I wish them the strength to get through this terrible time of loss and grief. Besides his intelligence and humor Jonathan was one of the most loyal and supportive friends. He had great compassion and patience and always cheered you up with that impish smile and twinkle in his eyes.
I can’t think how hard this is for his family, his wonderful wife and two beautiful daughters of whom he was so proud. Just remember Jonathan would want nothing but your happiness and would want you to celebrate his life by living your own to the fullest as he had. May we all follow his example.

Jonathan's loss is a shock and we are deeply saddened. In his quite, reflective, yet often hillarious way, Jonathan stretched our thinking, challenged us to greater insights, and always helped us with best-in-class theory and practice that shaped our craft. Many of the best ideas from the field have Jonathans finger prints all over them. He was a tribute to the agency, to our field, and to all of humanity. He left a big mark in this world, and we will miss him greatly. Our love and support go out to you Karen and your lovely daughters....God bless him.

I was in Manila with Jonathan Kayes in the mid 1980s. Jonathan was simply wonderful and a wonderful person to work with. I knew him at a time when he and his future wife (then in Indonesia) became engaged. In Manila, he learned that he could get the Wall Street Journal from me relatively easily, since it lacked a sports page!! He also instructed me about my investments and I listened and learned from him. Jonathan was a wonderful person, and my thoughts are with his family, his wife, his daughters. They are young adults and I know will miss their father.

Jonathan, you didn't owe me an apology...I'm just so glad I was in time to let you know how much knowing you means to me. Long ago we paved the way for a new program to make the world better. Without your openess, your willingness to share your knowledge, and your dedication - we would not have been a success. Thank you. Our paths have crossed throughout our careers - each time sharing a new experience.
Jonathan, you are so missed. The notes are flying and so are the tears - your passing has rocked our world.
Take care Jonathan. May you be at rest; free from pain; and may your soul be free to soar.

Jon was one of the brightest people I ever had the pleasure to meet. We spent many an hour debating military history, talking about everything that was happening in the world, and trading terrible puns. And that was in high school. I think that it was wonderful that he was able to spend his life pursuing his passions. Clearly, it was a life well spent.

I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to be with Jonathan at the Learning Leaders seminar just a few weeks ago. I could tell he was not feeling well but he wanted to be part of the action. It seemed at every lunch we ended up sitting together. I told him at one point that he did not have the appearance or toughness of a person that would have worked at the CIA. He then turned to me and said,” Bob, what do you think a person should look like with that type of job”. I replied, “Bond, James Bond”. He then said, “That’s not the idea, a CIA person needs to blend into the crowd”.
What a great guy!!

I feel robbed. Jonathan was not only a gifted teacher who still had a lot to give all of us in education (whether "corporate" or not), but he was just one of the most erudite and decent folks I had the pleasure of getting to know. And I didn't get to know him well enough. I was looking forward to many debates on everything from books to movies to food and especially had looked forward to cooking with him and breaking bread, sharing wine and good conversation. He was just lovely and engaging and the world is diminished. That said, what a legacy he leaves. Einstein talked about not being a man of success but rather one of value and Jonathan embodied that in everything he did.

I met Jon my freshman year in college and we were roommates our sophomore year, and he spent alot of time listening to Wagner opera those first two years and for the next two on 5 Jay. Jon was a warm, funny, witty and interesting guy, who shared a passion for learning that I admired and tried to emulate. He came to Vermont to study Chinese and I enjoyed giving him a tour of Fort Ticonderoga on a hot July day. We were looking forward to our upcoming trip to Colorado. That trip will have new meaning for me now.
To Jon's family, I offer my sincerest condolences and my best wishes for all of you. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I may be of any assistance up here in New England at any time.

The number of posts on this page (in just one day) give a better sense of the great impact Jonathan had on the lives of others than anything I could write. I feel blessed to have had jonathan as a good friend and mentor for a number of years. Only Jonathan could use a word like omphaloskepsis correctly in a sentence or work in the theory of Transactional Distance to any lunchtime conversation. Thanks, Jonathan, for all the learning!

This is such a shock - our prayers and thoughts are with you all and especially with Jonathan's family.
I am in Baghdad at the moment and I wanted to pay my respects.
Jonathan impressed me with his style and communication skills. Perhaps more importantly I recall how welcoming he was to a newcomer from overseas when he was such a veteran attendee. He was a gentleman and a gentle man - not a combination seen often enough these days. I will remember his unfailing enthusiasm for learning and also for inspiring those with whom he came into contact.
I am sure that you will receive many messages from others with similar experiences of his kindness and warmth. I hope that all these fond memories will go someway to easing the pain felt by all his loved ones at this time.
May God continue to bless him.

I am so endlessly sad. It has been a true pleasure and honor getting to know you as part of the Masie family in recent months. I so wish we had more time. You have been so inspiring to me with your warmth, your wonderful sense of humor, your wisdom, your spirituality, your amazingly broad cultural awareness and your leadership excellence. There are so many things I wanted to learn from you. So much advice I wanted to ask for.
I was surprised by your high energy level and faith while seeing and feeling how serious your illness was. You were so strong. When most of us would have simply given up, you not only had energy for yourself but also for us checking in with on your health. Maybe that is why even though my heart knew much earlier I still do not want to believe it. Nothing can ever fill the gap you are leaving. All that is left for me is to be grateful for the short time I had with you, our professional collaboration and private side conversations that I wish you knew have already had so much impact on key decisions in my life.
May you be well and free of suffering wherever you are now. My love goes to your family and friends.

I was foruntate to be one of the participants at the Masie Academy Program 2 weeks ago and it was an honor to be in the presence of Jonathan. In reflecting on Jonathan's engagement in the program I was impressed with his ability to distill what was being said or asked to him immediately providing essential, thought provoking information or in turn asking a critical question to stimulate further thought or discussion.
His inner strength as a leader for the Academy in face of such illness is testament to his physical and mental courage and to his passion & commitment to learning.
